Price slashing boosts orders to Taiwanese notebook makers

David Tzeng, Taipei; Willie Teng, DigiTimes.com [Friday 27 April 2001]

Seemingly unaffected by the global market downturn, Taiwanese manufacturers’ notebook shipments rose in April and are expected to continue climbing through the next two months. With their strong ability to control costs, Taiwanese manufacturers have benefited from the price slashing by international notebook companies. Low price models will be the mainstream product in 2001.

Orders from Dell Computer and Compaq Computer are expected to boost Quanta Computer’s April shipments to 420,000 units, while Arima Computer, helped by NEC’s new models, will reach 100,000 units. Still undergoing restructuring, Acer should post its strongest month thus far in 2001 with 140,000 units.

With Compaq losing market share, Inventec’s notebook shipments will be one of the few Taiwanese manufacturers to see a month-on-month decline.
