Intel has had constant competition for 30 plus years. Yet by constantly spending large sums of money on R & D and leading edge FABS, they have consistently been one of the most profitable enterprises on the planet. Intel is a master at executing this strategy, while others like AMD can only look upon Intel's consistent profits with envy.

Intel has good fabs. Just as good as AMD's. Their product planning has been a disaster of late. P4 should have killed AMD, but they just plain screwed up with some very poor microarchitectural decisions.
