Infolatina via NewsEdge Corporation : MEXICO CITY, Apr 30, 2001 (Reforma/Infolatina via COMTEX) -- Grupo Iusacell, Mexico's second-largest mobile telephone carrier, this year will spend 229 million dollars to upgrade its data transmission networks, newly named company CEO Peter Burrowes said. Burrowes also said Iusacell would create a new division to focus on mobile Internet and announced that the company this year would begin migration to CDMA technology, in preparation for a later move to third-generation technology, Mexico City daily Reforma reported. Burrowes said mobile Internet services in Mexico remained limited, with slow development of appropriate handsets and few suitable web sites. According to industry analysts, Mexico currently has around 40,000 mobile Internet users, a year after such services were first launched. There are around 14.4 million mobile telephone users in the country. Iusacell at the end of last year had 1.7 million mobile telephone clients, or around 12 percent of the total market. Vodafone Group and Verizon Communications both own large minority stakes in Iusacell.
