American Power Conversion Introduces Three Models of Rugged- Grade Power Protection for Industrial Applications -
biz.yahoo.com
WEST KINGSTON, R.I., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- To address the growing demand for power protection customized to meet the needs of specific industries, American Power Conversion (APC) today unveiled three new uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) designed for harsh conditions -- such as dust, extreme temperatures, and vibration -- found in factories and other industrial environments.

Among APC's new UPS models is a unit specifically designed for PLC's (Programmable Logic Controllers) and other industrial control applications. This UPS can be mounted on DIN rails (mounting brackets often used for industrial controllers) or directly into the controls cabinet and provides 500VA (volt-amperes) of back-up power. Additionally, two new industrialized Smart-UPS® models, available in 1500VA and 2000VA, are being introduced and are designed to fit into standard 19`` racks typically found on the factory floor.

``APC's goal is to create quality, innovative power protection products that meet the needs of specific customer applications,'' said Rick Murphy, general manager of APC's Special Products Group. ``The introduction of our new DIN-rail and rack-mount UPSs provide back-up power specifically designed for the critical systems found in harsh environments on the factory floor, reducing the cost of downtime due to power outages or voltage fluctuations.''

The new DIN-rail mountable UPS features screw terminals for hardwired input and output, which are designed to ensure connectivity to the attached equipment. Additionally, state-of-the-art battery management helps ensure a high level of reliability including pre-programmed self-tests of the internal batteries every two weeks.

When the batteries do need to be replaced, generally after 3-5 years, a ``replace battery'' indicator on the front panel of the unit is illuminated, and a signal is sent via a DB-9 port to an attached computer or operating system alerting the user of the battery's status.

The new rack-mount Smart-UPS units occupy only 3U of rack space and, unlike the standard Smart-UPS models, feature a fully rated internal isolation transformer which isolates the input and output power of the UPS in case grounding is poor or non-existent. All Smart-UPS models include APC's award- winning PowerChute® plus power management software which gives users the ability to control their UPSs and safeguard data by executing unattended software shutdown during an extended power outage.

The new 500VA UPS, the SP500DR, will be available in May 2001 in North America and has an estimated resale price of $495. The new rack-mount Smart- UPS models, SU1500RMX155 and SU2000RMX155, are currently available in North America and have an estimated resale price of $3,150 and $4,650, respectively.
