Dear Semiconeng:

Having a great manufacturing base does not help a bad design. The other way is somewhat less problematical of late, having a good design but a bad manufacturing base. At least in the latter situation, you can contract the manufacturing like in fabless design companies.

If intel was so much better positioned, why did Intel unit sales decreased so much, when AMD sold more in the last quarter? If total units go down or stay relatively flat, wouldn't Intel continue to sell less units, if the trend continues? Intel must be hoping that the boom will be back sooner rather than later. Remember, Intel forecast a good probability for lower revenue for this quarter, flat to down 10%. With spending going up, this would further reduce profits. If 20% down nets a 5/6ths reduction in profits, a further 10% down thus nets a further 5/12ths reduction or a total of a negative 1/4 profit. A GAAP loss of 10 cents a share would not be pretty for the stock. Any further loss would make even the exclusion of acquisition costs not generate a profit per share. Perhaps that is why they are increasing the amount of acquisitions?

Pete
