Tench, Re: If you haven't noticed, Athlon still generates more heat than the Pentium 4, even though the P4 runs at higher clock speeds and has a larger die size.

If you haven't noticed, Intel specifies average power consumption (TDP) while AMD usually gives maximum power consumption. But if you dig a little bit deeper you'll get the maximum numbers for the P4, too:

1.7 GHz P4 1.75V 50.2A 83.6W (64.0W)
1.3 GHz P4 1.75V 39.8A 67.1W (51.6W)
1.3 GHz Athlon 1.75V 39.0A 68.0W (61.0W)

So even at the same clock-speed (where an Athlon outperforms a P4 by a great margin, even on most optimized code) both processors consume roughly about the same.
