True but if someone is offering them help and telling them "don't do X,Y and Z", they often do X, Y and Z anyway, esp when they are not being watched by their benefactor.

I did not know this.

I think it is important to apportion the influence of MT into two very distinct categories of people: the dying pariahs whom were brought to her hospices, and those whom simply adopted the moral positions of a high profiled and compelling personality.

I dare say, there are many many Americans who carved out their specific beliefs--in part because of their reverence for the Mother. It is not only for the rock stars and Princesses of the world to influence. Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa also had huge impacts on the moral choices of many many people.

In regards to the choices of abortion and birth control: a determination not to avail oneself of these options may result in the births of many children worldwide.

Many people in the helping professions believe that they ought to have as their goal the elimination of their jobs. They believe in a healthy world, where disease and despair are prevented rather than ameliorated or haphazardly cured. They believe in trying to end suffering--in eliminating it as much as possible. They do not support policies that increase suffering. This, at least, is the general picture.

I guess the problem is that MT and her minions were not part of any helping professions, but were ministering to the afterlife, much as the Egyptians would prepare the dying for their journey beyond. MT made it clear she was simply preparing people for Christ. I suppose it is this basic difference between the professional helping community, and the religious Sisters, which confesses the abysmal gulf that divides the two camps, and which reflects the deep acrimony of people watching the demands of suffering outstripping the supply of the healers.

A lot of people don't believe that suffering is the WILL OF GOD, and thus a good thing. They don't believe the suffering need "kisses from Jesus". They believe that the suffering need medicine, and health care, and relief from the everpresent and unending agony of their pain.

I suppose you could see where this difference of opinion might cause anger...
