Micromuse's Netcool Suite to be Used by Excite@Home

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2001--

Service Assurance Solution Is Designed to Help Enhance
Broadband Leader's Network Monitoring Capabilities

Micromuse Inc. (Nasdaq: MUSE), the leading provider of realtime
fault management and service assurance software, today announced that
Excite@Home (Nasdaq: ATHM), a leader in broadband, intends to deploy
correlation and presentation applications from the Netcool(R) suite.
The Netcool applications are designed to help a company such as
Excite@Home provide end-to-end monitoring of its broadband network
infrastructure.
"To keep pace with increased demand for Internet services and our
customers' growing requirements, we look for solutions that help us
quickly expand and adapt our broadband network," said Mark O'Leary,
executive vice president of broadband services for Excite@Home.
"Micromuse's Netcool suite provides a flexible and open solution that
is designed to help us improve the efficiency of our overall network
service-delivery infrastructure."
"Excite@Home is one of the best known names on the Internet
because of its ability to successfully deliver a high-availability,
high-speed broadband connection to millions of customers nationwide,"
said Mike Donohue, Micromuse's senior vice president sales & business
operations. "With its ability to deploy off the shelf to monitor
hundreds of environments and devices, the Netcool suite is well-suited
to help Excite@Home meet its needs."
Excite@Home intends to deploy Micromuse's flagship
Netcool/OMNIbus(TM) application to help maintain its integrated
broadband offerings. By collecting, and consolidating events from
various network devices, the Netcool/OMNIbus application will provide
realtime, end-to-end monitoring of Excite@Home's nationwide
infrastructure.
Excite@Home's 5-Gbps network infrastructure includes a fiber-optic
IP backbone, super nodes, local caching servers and cable modems, all
of which are monitored from two network operations centers (NOCs) -
one on each coast. The Netcool/(R)OMNIbus application is designed to
provide an end-to-end view of events occurring throughout the network,
and is designed to help network operators in the NOCs identify and
respond to network issues before they systematically affect the
delivery of services.
Excite@Home also intends to deploy the Netcool/Internet Service
Monitors(TM) suite (Netcool/ISMs(TM)) which is designed to provide
real-time Internet service availability and response-time information
of 18 different Internet protocols and applications, including HTTP,
FTP, DNS and RADIUS. Netcool/ISMs(TM) are designed to help Excite@Home
improve the manageability of its Internet-based offerings by regularly
testing each service at user-defined intervals.
Micromuse's Netcool/Precision(TM) application is intended to help
Excite@Home's network operations team to quickly determine the precise
location of network-related service issues. The Netcool/Precision
software's patented Network Slice(TM) technology is designed to
discover the actual path traveled by a packet between two devices on
the network - right down to the entry or exit connection on a switch
or router. This is expected to help the team isolate issues and
expedite the maintenance process.
Micromuse will be exhibiting at the Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando
Florida May 9-11, booth #1837.

About the Netcool(R) Suite
Micromuse's Netcool(R) software suite collects management data
from more than 300 management environments and network devices,
including voice, data and Internet. Fault data is rapidly processed
and filtered by the Netcool ObjectServer(TM) an in-memory database.
The Netcool suite helps operators to build views of service
availability in realtime, helping them manage networks more
efficiently. Because it is scalable and deploys rapidly, the Netcool
suite helps service providers to expand their networks as their
markets grow.
