How Much is that Spanning Tree in the Window?
Spanning Tree is a Layer 2 redundancy protocol for Ethernet. It allows the network designer to employ redundant networking paths without performing Layer 3 routing. Normally these redundant paths are not allowed in Ethernet network design because normally Ethernet will not function if any part of a Layer 2 Ethernet segment contains a physical loop. Spanning tree will automatically determine the Layer 2 networks topology and ensure that actual traffic does not flow in a loop by blocking traffic on specific segments, i.e. traffic flows in a path that resembles a "tree" that has a single "root" with branches that never loop.

Network Management
Networking environments are constantly changing. Information comes from multiple sources, traffic is unpredictable and performance demands are steadily rising. The emergence of new applications will continue to increase this momentum. Enterprise networks are dealing with e-commerce, enterprise resource planning, private Intranets and supply-chain extranets. And service providers need a highly available and scalable broadband infrastructure - one that overcomes provisioning and performance constraints and allows providers to satisfy the rising demand for IP services and reliably provision those services to customers. Without this, they can’t compete in the marketplace.

Service Provider Solutions
Packet over SONET
The explosion in the need for bandwidth, fueled by the rapid growth of the Internet, has led to a substantial revamping of existing service provider networks. To meet the demanding needs, not only are the incumbent service providers being forced to make drastic changes to scale their networks, but also the doors have opened up for a new breed of services providers offering a unique set of services.
