Networkers aren't feeling quite at home down on the farm with Williams
Communications (WCG:NYSE - news) these days.

Striking a thrifty note in a cash-poor era,
Williams said Tuesday it would slash $700
million from its equipment budget over two
years, leaving its capital-spending target at
$3.2 billion. The network builder said the
spending cut was possible because it was
able to squeeze lower prices from a swarm of
eager competing suppliers. And striking more
fear in the hearts of suppliers, Williams said it
is making more and more sales of network
capacity to rival telcos that can't afford to build their own networks.

Those developments look good for Williams, whose shares rose fractionally to
close at $4.55. But Williams is not out of the woods financially, analysts say,
noting a massive gap between its capital spending plans and funds on hand.
And even the trends that look bullish for Williams spell more bad news for the
networking-equipment vendors like Sycamore (SCMR:Nasdaq - news) that
once made up Williams' so-called farm team. These gear sellers are feeling
the squeeze as telcos such as Williams play them off against one another,
pushing down prices......
