Patricia,

You can uncheck those items in Startup (msconfig) or Start/Programs/Start Ups, your program icons will REMAIN in
Start/Programs. As PW mentioned you could make a folder on your Desktop and put the most often used Prog Icons there and/or into the QuickLaunch Bar beside the Start button
on the Taskbar.
