"The way companies account for acquisitions is back on the front burner. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) said today it may further delay a decision on how companies value goodwill, the difference between the price paid for a company and the value of that company's assets. The idea is to get companies to use one method, the purchase method of accounting, which does not create
goodwill, versus the pooling of assets. How and when companies are able to amortize goodwill will no doubt impact quarterly earnings numbers. Depending on the outcome, analysts see the potential for a string of acquisitions in order to not be subject to an unfavorable
ruling.
