mPhase Technologies Unveils Non-IP Based Digital Television Headend At Hart Telephone
mPhase First to Deliver Live Broadcast, MPEG-2 Quality TV In Native Form Via DSL To Consumers
NORWALK, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2001--mPhase Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: XDSL), the leading designer of broadcast digital television and high-speed data solutions for the telecommunications industry, unveiled its Non-Internet Protocol (NIP)-based digital television headend for the Traverser(TM) Digital Video and Data Delivery System (DVDDS) at Hart Telephone in Hartwell, Georgia. The Traverser headend is typical of a cable headend and is sending NIP-based, MPEG-2 digital television directly to Hart's wireline telephony customers.

Set up as a showcase in a newly created technology center in Hart Telephone, the system features the mPhase NIP-based digital headend which downlinks digital television signals from satellite feeds using low cost off-the-shelf, standard cable encoding and receiving equipment, allowing television signals to be delivered cost-effectively over telephone wires. The headend is then coupled with mPhase's patented, proprietary Traverser DVDDS to guarantee the quality, security and reliability of the television content being delivered to the end user.

``At a time when IP-based delivery of video has proven unreliable, problematic and costly, resulting in casualties and cut-backs in IP-based video equipment vendors, we are convinced that mPhase possesses a superior, reliable and cost-effective video delivery system that results in a sound business plan for telephone companies wishing to compete with their local cable companies,'' said Company president and CEO Ronald A. Durando. ``We believe this is even more applicable to international telcos looking to increase revenue and profitability by provisioning for television services in areas of the world that lack a coaxial cable infrastructure.''

mPhase believes worldwide demand for a system that can provide quality digital television services at cost-effective prices is extremely strong. The Company's proprietary technology takes the end user beyond simple high-speed Internet access, data and voice to provide a fuller, richer package of entertainment and information services. The Traverser DVDDS enables telecommunications companies to simultaneously broadcast MPEG-2 quality digital television, and provide for high-speed Internet access and traditional telephone service over existing copper telephone wires. No other system on the market is more cost-effective, reliable and scaleable.

``Hart Telephone is excited about the Traverser DVDDS headend installation,'' said Hart Telephone Vice President of Operations Ron Anderson. ``mPhase's Traverser technology is unique in the fact that it is not IP- or ATM-based, and it retains MPEG-2 video quality end-to-end.''

mPhase's Traverser DVDDS provides telephone companies with the ability to compete with broadband carriers in the emerging market for television and high-speed Internet services by providing an all-in-one communications solution. This approach maximizes telcos' substantial investment in existing copper telephone wires.
