A very good novel, okay uneven novel but compelling story, is Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg. A very gruesome jailhouse scene involving the guards, but that can skipped over if the stomach can't take it.

It starts out in the 60's sometime, if I remember right. I just went and looked it up to make sure I got the name right and read the reviews. One said it didn't put itself well in the context of the time. I disagree, though. Overall historical time, perhaps not. But in terms of showing this woman's story not only in the personal, but in terms of the community, and it's diversity and the challenges faced in weaving the various aspects of it together, very much so, imo.

And I just found the character interesting, too. :)
