Bush was in China's face since day 1. He pissed them off about Star Wars, threatened their diplomats, increased surveilance missions, and was largely responsible for the plane incident having occurred.

I was the first to call for a concilatory letter on this thread to bring the boys home, and about 1 week later Bush sent a very similar letter. The next day the boys were home.
