Sorry to pull away quickly, I was checking something. Anyway, other elements are exoticism; a willingness to focus on the "elite" version of the religion to the exclusion of the popular version; lack of an historical dynamic, for example, there are no Western attacks on Tibetan Buddhism comparable to Protestant attacks on Catholicism; the fact that apologists often hide blemishes,or explain in terms that are modern and comfortable to us, and we are often only a book or two familiar with Eastern religions; the fact that major representative movements from the East are marketed to Americans, like TM or Nichiren Shoshu; and the sense of smorgasbord........
