But heros? Not by my definition.

I posted the column on heroes and victims. I agree with both the column and you regarding what it takes to be a hero. Our society uses that word way to lightly.

I was just curious, given what we know now about how things turned out if you still think it would have been better if the plane had sunk and the crew had died. One of the odd things about SI discussions is that we talk and talk about breaking news when we know almost nothing but never go back for a post mortem on our thinking.

Regarding your definition of hero, I might be inclined to add another category. I'm not sure, but I think the word could be appropriately applied to those four year olds who have the composure to call 911 and communicate with the operator when mommy collapses. Their motives aren't particularly heroic, but their behavior is far more effective than one could reasonably expect. What do you think?
