I don't believe that MO currently plans to spin any Kraft shares out to its shareholders. Rather, less than 15% of Kraft is being sold with proceeds going to MO, and thus to the benefit of its shareholders.

The best thing that could happen to MO would be for Governments ot outlaw tobacco. That way, governments could no longer collect taxes on a product that they've made illegal. And I have to think of the enormous wealth this approach gave to the Bronfman family through their Seagram's empire as a result of prohibition.

When the Canadian governments attempted to tax the tobacco companies out of existence a few years back, all they did was create a new industry in which tax free cigarettes were exported to the US and the Indians with reservations straddling the US Canada border "smuggled" the tax free product back into Canada for sale at enormous profits to the indians and an enormous tax loss to the government.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about government interference any time soon. The Tobacco settlement has got them dependent upon tobacco not only surviving but thriving if they ever wish to collect all those 100s of Billions. I think we can trust politicians to stay greedy, if not corrupt.
