IBM releases next PowerPC roadmap

We suspect that Book E is simply a baseline description of a PowerPC processor that, like the chip itself, has evolved as new technologies have emerged. Early Book E parts were 32-bit, for example, but next-generation ones will be 64-bit. Despite that difference, they'll still both be Book E processors - provided they retain backward compatibility.

I believe they will be using a single Power4 core and add their own version of the AltiVec SIMD instructions. Power4 is the only IBM core I'm aware of that can scale past 1GHz on .18um and past 2GHz on .13um. Sounds like they may get serious about providing Apple with a viable high performance platform. This is after 3 years of mindless indifference. I don't believe any of this roadmap involves Moto.
