hi tc

yes, put me with the group that liked their computer until pcpitstop told me how bad a performer it is. <g3>

things just got worse for me over here in win98se (told to upgrade my disk drive), complicated by the fact that my F drive partition is not recognized as holding an os, yet, according to pcpitstop, "Of the total 17.74 GB of disk space available on this system, just 3.39 GB (19%) is still available. The rest is being used by program and data files. You may be able to increase available disk space by uninstalling applications, deleting unneeded files, or moving rarely-needed files to a backup".

i am also getting whacked for outlook express security settings being too loose (i don't use oe). another big ding for me is my cable modem. it's a 'one-way' cm in that it uses a 56k analog for upstream and cable modem for downstream. i think pcpitstop expects better out of a cable modem, and when i tell it i get 56k up, i get poor performance grades.

i'm not really willing to close running programs (three firewalls <g>, av software, and all the other stuff) in order to pump up the rating. probably get hacked if i did. <g3>

all in all, i am paying attention to most of what pcpitstop has to say... for instance in win98se they're alerting me to not only browser cache size probs, but also disk cache settings problems. for anyone interested, here is what they're giving me on that note:

*****************************

"Adjust file cache
The maximum file cache size is set too low on this system, which can cause poor disk performance. We advise that you let Windows set the cache size. To do this, you will need to remove the cache settings in the SYSTEM.INI file using a plain text editor such as Notepad. Look for this line:

MaxFileCache=8192

Put a semicolon in front of the line to disable the setting:

; MaxFileCache=8192

Save the file, and restart the computer so that the new setting will take effect. If you want to keep a custom setting for MaxFileCache, we recommend a value no smaller than one-quarter of your total memory. (For this system with 256MB, the lowest MaxFileCache value we recommend would be 65536.)

MinFileCache and MaxFileCache settings are often created by third-party memory management utilities. We have found that most of these utilities do not improve performance and can sometimes cause stability problems, so we do not advise that you use any of them."

*****************************

i think i'll make that cache adjustment now (i'm looking at the system.ini file now).

:)
