RE: Olympus and Lexar--If they design a controller to allow much greater capacity with a SmartMedia card, what do they gain? Put another way, if there were a 256 mb SmartMedia card for an Olympus camera, would it be any better or cheaper than a 256 mb Compact Flash card? Seems to me that there would have to be a substantial improvement in performance or a much lower price to warrant such a design. Would they build a new controller into the camera rather than the flash card in order to keep the price of the flash card down? I don't have the technical background to determine which would be the best alternative, but it seems to me there are some advantages in terms of compatibility for keeping the controller and the flash memory part of the chip together. If so, what is the advantage of SmartMedia?

Olympus appears to have an improved CCD in their $2000 digital single lens reflex camera, which has a resolution of 4 mpixels. As a practical matter, if one makes high resolution photos on this camera, one would need at least 128 mb card storage, and preferably 256 or 512 mb.

Regarding other digital camera manufacturers, it appears that Sanyo is among the largest volume producers of cameras sold under different labels.
