On the left? I suppose the vast majority of folks who created the popular vote victory for Gore would hardly consider themselves '...on the left'!.

In any event, the important line from the article was, 'It would also require that ballots in extremely close elections be recounted by hand — the very practice that Florida election officials and the Bush campaign had opposed so fiercely last year in their battle with Democrats...' which would strongly suggest that the right, as represented by James Baker, was inventing baseless reasons, on the fly, to avoid a recount. Baker (and his rep. cronies) were scared witless of the result of a recount.

BTW, the article noted James Baker 'could not be reached for comment' on the Florida voting reforms.

Surprise, surprise.
