Wilder,
Apologies if I pointed you at this already. But given your interest in X-Ray crystallography plays, I thought it would be best to be on the safe side and post it:

I listened to the DPII and CALP CCs. Burned out on taking notes; following are general impressions that I've retained through a night's sleep.
DPII's core business steady, but big ticket items such as combinatorial libraries and NanoKan high throughput chemical synthesis systems are running into quicksand at the beancounters' doors. CEO claiming several customers evaluating the systems, and that the scientists and their managers want 'em, but that many customers are reprioritizing their R&D budgets. This has the effect of deferring purchases. Since these systems have long lead times, the two system sales they had forecast would sell this year will likely not sell till next year. Hence guidance for the year was lowered.
CALP was uniformly upbeat. One wild card for them is what comes out of their technology access program (which is hard to predict beyond a couple of years) and their technological collaborations with Agilent (results of which CALP can only hint about now), and Millenium (about which they can talk a little). They are not seeing any slowdown in demand for their stuff, and they say Agilent has penetrated most of the major pharmas and is selling workstations in clusters there. They intend to replace 2-D gels. The more I learn about CALP, the more I like it. Ambitious and executing. CALP will be Trickle's #1 target for purchase on pullbacks, with WAT, SIAL, QGENF, and IVGN in the pack.
Trickle's impression of the market is that proteomics instrumentation -- such as MS -- will sell OK, but otherwise the place to be is in consumables for another quarter or two.
Off to Red Rocks for a week this afternoon. It's a photogenic place, and I expect to be shooting as well as climbing. I've got a backlog of pictures to process, some of which will make it into the online album. I'd be most curious to hear fellow TrickleMavens notes of next week's CCs (BDAL, QGENF, EBIO, etc.), if any of you feel so inclined. Back by Friday.
Cheers, Tuck |
