The really neat thing about kava or 'ava as we call it is the preparation. A bunch of wahine sit around in their lava lava chewing kava kava root and spitting the masticated pieces into a calabash. When it is full, and the girls thoroughly hipped on the various alkaloids ingested subtlely in the process the hula hula begins and all the gests are invited to tip calabashen of kava kava up and swallow them completely. This is easy to do because true kava kava comes in one piece.
One continues pledging and drinking kava kava until the distal numbness in the extremities causes the satiated drinker to stagger and fall face down in the coals or ashes of the communal fire. Special prizes go to those who hang on long enough that the fire have become ashes rather than coals.
Thus one becomes drunk up to their ashes on kava.
