Re: Needed Reform to Federal Taxes

>>Raise the estate tax minimum to 1.5M for basic assets, and $5M for a working farm or business. After that, gradually phase into max of 50%<<

David R, from the viewpoint of fairness, why should some citizens get an exemption from estate tax that is over three times that of others?

Why should the children of small business owners or farmers get to follow in their parents footsteps with a massive tax break? Why shouldn't business employees, doctors, lawyers, etc., be allowed to accumulate wealth to better educate their children and grandchildren and prepare them to be more productive members of our society? Wealth left to children and grandchildren could enable then to start their own businesses or purchase farms. Why should only those families already in business or operating a farm get a tax break?

The current law allows the estates of small business and farm owners to pay estate taxes over a long number of years, with interest. This is designed to eliminate the forced sale of the family business or farm. This instalment payment provision, coupled with a realistic exemption, something like $3 million to $5 million per citizen, should get the job done. A married couple could pass $6 to $10 million on before tax would kick in.

Other than your estate tax idea, I think your other suggestions are right on!!!!

Good luck!
