Just about all PC software of any significance (including application software by Microsoft) "commandeers the machine and tweaks all sorts of things behind the user's back without asking permission." It's almost a necessity due to the way Microsoft OS's are put together. Reserving that right to Microsoft, to the exclusion of other developers, isn't the answer.

JMHO.
