Lee, I dont envy your two tours in Viet Nam. You were one of those brave guys. I predated you into the zone a few years (63 thru 67)...flying C130E's in and out of all the airfields from Tan San Nhut to Cam Rahn, Pleiku, Na Trang even Nakom Phanom West w/it's metal waffle runway. Whatta noise on landing there, brrrrrrrrppppppppp!!!....mostly flying logistics (taking it easy compared to your tours)....We did sadly lose on of our squadron's C130's tho....It inexplicably exploded 10:30 at night departing Cam Rahn Bay as is it ascended through 10,000 feet. I had brought the airplane into Kadena that morning and was waiting to take it back to Hickam the next morning. It never arrived of course. Strangely, this experience with Ampex over the past 12 months is reminiscent of some of those crashing and burning nightmares I had as a young Navy lieutenant. I found that Tanqueray in an up glass did wonders then...Now, it's merlot.
