Well, I have held short positions in several stocks which had 100% initial and maintenence requirements. Of course that was mostly the first part of last year. So no, it isn't that simple.

Yes it really is pretty simple Barb. Shorting only needs to occur in a Margin account and not necessarily ON margin. If you do not have a margin account you cannot short. Your example really has nothing to do with the issue because it WAS in a margin account and met the requirements at that time. Kind of like shorting an IPO. We know it can be done with affirmative determination but it needs to be done in a margin account.
