State of the Web: It's Not Too Late to Sell Scient, Viant and Razorfish

Few groups have been hit as hard as the Internet consulting contingent, the Scients (SCNT:Nasdaq - news - boards) and the Viants (VIAN:NasdaqE - news - boards) and the Razorfishes (RAZF:Nasdaq - news - boards). How much I would like to be able to tell you that these companies will make it, but as I sit and listen to their conference calls and read their quarterly statements, I just don't know how they're going to do it, unless they're willing to merge with each other. That, unfortunately, seems out of the question.

In fact, I think Razorfish is a total goner. It hasn't done anything right in ages and ousting that flamboyant management team last week was much too little, too late. Scient and Viant seem to go out of their way to brag about how little dot-com business they have now. That's a nonstarter because they don't have that much nondot-com business, either.

Because the projects these companies are involved in are long term and because these companies can't seem to prove their viability -- i.e., they can't seem to stop losing money -- I think it's still not too late to sell all three. If you need to be in Internet infrastructure so badly that you can't stay away, may I suggest you buy IBM (IBM:NYSE - news - boards) and Electronic Data Systems (EDS:NYSE - news - boards)? They are viable and taking share without any of the horrible headlines that these other three companies keep generating.
