Richard, I don't really understand:

Am I missing something? Ethernet is for LAN implementations - it has
very limited cable lengths. These length limitations are not just
electrical, they are imposed by the collision detection characteristic
of the ethernet protocol. ATM is intended for Wide Area Networks. It
is basically like frame relay, but uses fixed length packets to allow
for voice as well as data. This is a simplistic description of ATM,
but good enough to make my point. ATM runs across the country, while
ethernet runs across the building. ATM is meant to connect LANs - and
carry digital voice and video at the same time. I'd like to hear
where you read that ATM is DOA.
