Tomcat - the "blades" architecture has been on CPQ's advanced roadmap for about a year, and is a different design than the RLX / Transmeta box. It was originally scheduled for a September launch and may have been held up by delays in Intel's "Tualatin" processor.

I question how quickly DELL could put out a product like this - they are dependent on Intel engineering, and Intel can hardly take work done jointly with CPQ and give it to DELL, even assuming DELL could do the rest of the design. Blade products are way different than standard rack-mount servers. I would not expect DELL to have a product like this any time soon.

Having said that, I am disappointed in CPQ's execution on their server roadmap - I don't think the current team has the focus or capability of the "classic" server team. Their 1u product was a year behind IBM and only a little ahead of DELL. The "blade" product will be behind Transmeta and IBM reportedly has a similar product on the roadmap, also for second half of this year. CPQ's "low end" DL320 is a good design for the market it is supposed to serve but is too expensive - CPQ may be worried about cannibalizing DL360 sales but they should be more worried about DELL. With basically PC components, I don't see why the DL320 could not be on the market at around $1000 instead of $2,485...
