LG Electronics is emerging as a leading power of the fixed wireless product market. WLL is gaining popularity especially in countries with weak telecommunications infrastructure thanks to its economical and convenient attributes.
In the global CDMA WLL (Wireless Local Loop) market whose total demand reached over 1.23 million devices last year, LGE supplied more than 500,000 units to take over 40% of the market. LGE is continuing its strong market presence this year, recording year-to-date supply of over 350,000 CDMA fixed wireless devices to be the top seller in this fast growing market.
With continuing strong performance, LGE is expected to supply more than 800,000 units (approx. US$15 million) in the global CDMA WLL market this year. With the total global demand expected to reach 1.5 million in 2001, this means that LGE will have over 53% of the entire market to emerge as the largest market share holder in the global CDMA WLL market.
Since first supplying CDMA fixed wireless products to Romania back in 1999, LGE quickly expanded its supply destination to 13 countries with focus on such strategic markets like Brazil and India. LGE's products were also a hit in Venezuela, Colombia, and other Central and South American countries as well as in Asia, Australia, and Africa. Currently, LGE is exporting four models of CDMA fixed wireless products: IS-95B - LSP-200, LSP-2000, LST-230 and LST-2300.
LGE was able to take the lead in the world CDMA WLL market by actively focusing on supply of CDMA WLL systems in regions with weak telecommunications infrastructure due to economic and geographical conditions like India, Brazil, and China. It also built local production plants and concentrated on increasing their productivity and quality, which allowed the company to enlarge its supply base.
In particular, LGE scored a large contract in India where it will supply CDMA WLL system (STAREX-WLL) developed with LGE's own proprietary technology. The contract encompasses the installation of 300,000 lines and is valued at US$240 million. The contract gives LGE a strong competitive advantage in India's WLL market, a country with high potential to emerge as the world's largest telecommunications market within a decade.
Moreover, LGE has introduced a wide range of product lines based on its own world-class technologies in CDMA devices as well as wired/wireless telephones. This coupled with localized customer-oriented service programs and aggressive marketing campaigns also played important parts in giving LGE a strong base in India.
LGE's CDMA fixed wireless products come in two types: Telephone type where the telephone and receiver are integrated into a single telephone (LSP-200 and LSP-2000); and terminal type where the terminal can be used through connection to general fixed line telephones.
LSP-200 is an 800MHz CDMA fixed wireless telephone (LSP-2000 is 1900MHz) with four-line LCD display (maximum display of 64 characters) that can offer both wired telephone services and data (Internet service). Its other features include short messaging service (SMS), caller ID display, speakerphone, and speed dialing (up to 99 memory locations). It also has 2 hours of talk time and 24 hours of standby time.
LST-230 is an 800MHz CDMA fixed wireless terminal (LST-2300 is 1900MHz) that supports data service at a maximum transmission speed of 64kbps (IS-95B). It can be used via connection to wired telephones (maximum 5 telephones), computer, fax or public phones. A variety of services are possible through connection with communication equipment. It is particularly suitable for urban areas with large concentration of businesses, SOHOs, households with multiple telephones and public telephone service providers. (Backup battery offers 2 hours of talk time and 24 hours of standby time).
LGE plans to solidify its leading position in CDMA WLL market this year and introduce new CDMA fixed wireless products to the global market to realize the strong growth potential of this market. More specifically, it will strengthen its competitive advantage in 2.5G CDMA WLL market with introduction of one model of LSP-2400 line (IS-95B) in late May and four new models in cdma2000-1X line (IS-95C) - LST-2500, LST-250, LSP-3000 and LSP-300 - in the latter half of the year. |
