FTTH Rollout in Iowa, using OSI:

Optical Solutions Inc and Contractor Property Developers Co. (CPDC) Begin Construction of the First Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Network in the Twin Cities Area

May 3, 2001

New Evermoor Community in Rosemount, Minn. to Feature "Future-Proof" Converged Telephone, Television, Internet and "Smart Home" Services Delivered Via Fiber Optic Links

MINNEAPOLIS (May 3, 2001) – Two Twin Cities companies, one an optical networking leader and the other a master planned community developer, are delivering the future of telecommunications to 1200 homes in the Evermoor community in Rosemount, Minnesota. New homes under construction in Evermoor will have access to the Twin Cities’ first fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network, delivering high speed Internet access, analog and digital television, and carrier-class telephone service.

A fiber optic link installed as part of the new home construction will provide up to four lines of state-of-the-art telephone service as well as access to additional broadband services, including 80 channels of "crystal clear" cable television channels and high-speed Internet data up to 10Mbps. In the future, Evermoor residents will be able to receive up to 100Mbps of data capacity, 200 digital and analog television channels, pay-per-view options and "smart home" services, where residents can control heating, cooling, lighting, security and other home functions remotely.

Optical Solutions is powering this network with its FiberPathâ FTTH platform, which features patented broadband technology that enables service providers to deploy scalable voice, video, and data services over a single fiber optic network. This "future proof" network has plenty of bandwidth to accommodate the ever-expanding list of high-speed Internet and video interactive services.

"We evaluated all the options and found that only FiberPath gives us the cutting-edge types of amenities we wish to provide to this community," said Homer Tompkins, President of CPDC. "We believe fiber-to-the-home is a construction upgrade that will help homes appreciate in value and make life easier for our customers."

"This is about choice and bandwidth that you won’t find elsewhere. Evermoor residents will have access to a range of services far beyond what traditional networks can support," said Darryl Ponder, Chairman and CEO, Optical Solutions Inc. "Residents will be among the first in the nation with the bandwidth and capability to enjoy a full range of digital movies, video and music programming, new and emerging Internet applications, and telephone and cable services."

The companies already have installed fiber to the first seven distinct neighborhood areas that will comprise phase one of the Evermoor community, and expect to have all "move-in" ready homes up and running by July 1, 2001. Other homes will be "automatically" connected upon their completion over the next year to eighteen months. Tompkins is opening a fiber-to-the-home demo center in mid-June at the Evermoor land office, and interested parties can visit Evermoor for a virtual tour on the web at www.evermooronline.com

"The fiber optic network feeding Evermoor will extend beyond neighborhood homes to also provide broadband network benefits to Rosemount schools, business and civic and community organizations," said Ponder. "That means connecting the whole community with access to each other and to all types of communication, information and entertainment services."

The selection of Optical Solutions’ FiberPath platform provides Evermoor a distinct competitive advantage over other communities that use technologies such as digital subscriber line (DSL), hybrid fiber coax (HFC) and wireless local loop. As a complete fiber-optic solution for FTTH deployments, FiberPath encompasses three sets of equipment: a headend bay of equipment, which can be co-located with a class 5 switch or interconnected through a GR-303 interface, a cost-effective passive optical network (PON) system to "split" the fiber from the central switching office to the home, and a customer premise node.

The headend bay sends and receives laser-driven light signals through optical fiber cables to and from a residence-mounted node via the passive optical network. The node is mounted on the side of each home and converts the optical signals into electronic signals needed for subscribers’ existing telephones, televisions and data modems. All of the construction (all the network components) is trenched underground to achieve improved neighborhood aesthetics.
