Severe pain is not my present situation!

No, I didn't get that impression. But when you have experienced severe pain, I don't think it's ever far from your consciousness.

I have never had a really bad time of it, but I've experienced enough that I know I don't want any more. One of the things I remember about it, and you wouldn't know this unless you have experienced it, is how slowly time goes by when you are in severe pain. Pain meds can take some time to kick in. The label may say ten minutes or thirty minutes and that doesn't seem unreasonable, but when it gets really bad, you take the pill and wait for what seems like forever only to find out it's only been a minute or two. Sometimes I get angry when I hear something like "He was in severe pain at the end but he died within a few days so he was lucky." A few days at that point can seem like an eternity in hell. I'll never be dismissive about the length of time someone is suffering. And I am particularly sympathetic about it when death is inevitable so there's nothing to be gained by enduring.
