CB -

My younger sister (the one who lives in Santa Barbara) and I aren't speaking again - we got into a fight about the Cali ute crisis last week - she's taking the Flatsville line, only worse - she's arguing that "profiteers" should be prosecuted as criminals and put in jail. This is apparently a common sentiment out there.

The real tragedy is that even if truly free markets can be installed, they will never work as well as they could because of political risk. Anyone bringing on supply in response to high prices and envisioned profits is too naive to run a company that I would want to invest in. Every industrial sector that is once tainted by government regulation and/or subsidy is forevermore addicted to the trading of political favors. This is why, no matter their technical promise, all of the alternate energy possibilities will fail as government prematurely yanks them from the womb and tries to mandate their use before their economic time.

Regards, Don
