Are you familiar with the book "Discipline without Stress, Punishments or Rewards" (Marvin Marshall)? My wife (1st grade) found it very interesting. Reinforces a lot of the things she has been doing but the school doesn't seem to understand the appropriateness of. I think a lot of teachers in theory oppose corporal punishment but don't have the tools or resources to handle 26 6 and 7 year olds without some form of threat, whether it be physical punishment, time out chairs (which is also a form of force), sending to the principal (ditto), etc. P thought this book was excellent in proposing a framework for discipline without needing to punish.

OTOH, a the founders of our country were brought up on the hickory stick, and they didn't do too badly. <g>
