'BusinessWeek' Names BEA CEO Bill Coleman One of the 'Most Influential People in e-Business'
e.biz 25 Notes Coleman's Leadership in Creating the World's #1 Java Application Server and Fastest Software Company Ever to Reach $1 Billion Revenue Run Rate
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 8, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS chart, msgs), one of the world's leading e-business infrastructure software companies, today announced that Founder, Chairman and CEO Bill Coleman has been recognized as one of "the most influential people in e-business" in the 'BusinessWeek' e.biz 25, to be published May 14, 2001.

"These are the pioneers, the people with the new ideas, the out-of-box thinkers, and the survivors -- especially the survivors -- who will shape e-business for years to come," notes the article, which is titled "25 Leaders for a Dangerous Time." Coleman was selected as a leader in the Architect category, along with Microsoft President Rick Belluzzo, Sun Microsystems Chairman and CEO Scott McNealy, FCC Chairman Michael Powell and Nokia President Pekka Ala-Pietila. Coleman and the rest of the e.biz 25 were selected based on their leadership, successful track records, history of innovation, and bold approach to the future.

"While other e-business software companies . . . are struggling, BEA is strutting its stuff," the article states. "That's because it makes the crucial software tools corporations need to quickly and efficiently build large and complex e-business applications. It handles everything from e-commerce Web sites to managing supply chains. 'BEA has the chance to be the next great software company,' says Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW chart, msgs) President Edward J. Zander."

A related 'BusinessWeek' "Online Extra" story published in the same issue, titled, "BEA Systems: An Oracle in the Making?," indicates that even in this volatile time BEA leads the application server market. The article notes that while BEA's second-place rival in this market -- IBM - -is a formidable competitor, it has failed to catch up because "IBM's software isn't integrated like BEA's. 'IBM has good software pieces, but it's hard to put them all together,' says (analyst firm) Lazard (Freres)' (Erick) Brethenoux."

"We are honored that 'BusinessWeek' recognizes BEA as one of the elite leaders in e-business," Coleman said. "While our feet are firmly planted in the reality of the times, our eyes have always been, and continue to be, on the future. We take great pride in developing products and services to help future-proof e-business and look forward to continuing to provide the operating system for the Internet in the form of the BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform."

BEA's listing in the e.biz 25 follows on the heels of a number of other recent corporate awards including the 'Fortune' e-50 Index, the 'eCompany' 40, the Jolt Productivity Award for BEA WebLogic Server(TM) and Intelligent Enterprise's list of "Hot Companies to Watch."
