"Dell after the Bell"

Dell After the Bell
Highlights of Dell Computer's announcement:

Will eliminate 3,000 to 4,000 regular full-time positions over the next two quarters.

To take a one-time fiscal second-quarter pretax charge of $250 million to $350 million.

Reiterates first-quarter results will meet previous guidance of $8 billion in revenue and 17 cents in per-share operating earnings.

Plans to combine certain manufacturing functions.

Will ask most U.S. salaried employees to take unpaid time off in current quarter.

Says it remains cautious about the outlook for the balance of the year.

Has significantly limited hiring of new employees.

Man, all this stuff sounds just like what I used to see at IBM in the early 1990's <ggg>... Lou Gerstner's contract is up at IBM soon, perhaps he can move over to Dell for a couple million more option shares and clean things up once again... At least he could coach Mikey and Tom on how to talk to WS and the financial press...

Regards,
John
