One small addition, as I agree completely. The social safety net is a wonderful, and needed, component to a capitalist or socialist society. The breakdown in both has historically been the safety net, as administered by a central government, became, one, a hammock, and two, the administering central government wasted the bulk of the target dollars in graft, bureaucracy ( overhead), and general waste. There are so many examples of good intentions gone bad, the one I use most is housing projects. Ever see one? What could be bad about giving people housing? The liberals never understood how after about one year these nice new abodes could look like they got nuked. Why? They weren't purchased, the people who got them didn't have their own blood, sweat, and tears in them, so they didn't take care of them ( in general- certainly some recipients were grateful ). What liberals forget is that pain and suffering is, in it's essence, a good, necessary, and powerful thing. I grew up poor, and nothing in my life has motivated me more. As I worked my way through college, there were weeks where I went hungry for a day or two waiting to stretch my next paycheck. I am not by nature a self-motivated person, so i am actually lucky to have been molded by my experiences. If I had had been given things, I would not be the person I am today. |
