Just a little niggle re: Jacques Delors, EU commissar-in-chief, has called for sanctions against Italy if Berlusconi is elected, on the grounds that his rather modest tax cut proposals would prove an obstacle to plans for the smooth homogenization of Europe.

Actually, Jacques Delors has not held any official EU job since 1994... He is no longer involved in French politics either. The French socialists implored him to run for the 1995 Presidential election but he declined their offer. If anything, he passed on the torch to his daughter, Martine Aubry, Jospin's former Minister of Labor and currently mayor of Lille.

As for the likely victory of Silvio Berlusconi in Italy, think of it as of Rupert Murdoch becoming Prime Minister of the UK --both men own a big chunk of the media landscape, both own the top soccer team (Manchester United and AC Milan), and both are staunch rightists.

Gus.
