A couple of points:

1. Stock valuations after the 1987 crash were very different than what they are now.

2. It is not at all clear that the beneficiaries of the enormous expansion of free trade, capitalism, the Internet, etc. will be US companies. In general, the freer the trade and the purer the capitalism, the lesser the profits, especially when new technologies are threatening to render obsolete many existing products and services. It's a jungle out there and it gets more and more competitive as the hungry beasts multiply.
