Japan Adds 1.1Mln Users; KDDI Gains Japan Adds 1.1 Mln Cell-Phone Users in April; KDDI Gains Share By Ian Messer Tokyo, May 9 (Bloomberg) -- Japan's three major cell-phone companies attracted almost 1.1 million new subscribers in April, according to data provided by the companies. KDDI Corp. won about 28.4 percent of new users after the nation's second-largest cellular company added three new handset models and attracted students through discounted services. The reported figures exclude users of PHS phones, or personal handyphone system, an alternative mobile technology. NTT DoCoMo Inc. was the main loser. The share of new users of Japan's dominant wireless carrier slipped to 54.1 percent from 61.2 percent in March. Japan Telecom Co.'s J-Phone Group accounted for the remaining 17.5 percent. Vodafone Group Plc, the world's largest cell-phone company, is set to become the largest shareholder in Japan Telecom after agreeing last week to buy British Telecommunications Plc's interests in the company. All three companies reported growth in subscribers to wireless Internet services. DoCoMo added 1.34 million new users to its i-mode service, bringing the total subscriber base to 23 million at the end of April. Japan's most valuable company will report its earnings for the fiscal year ended March 31 at 3 p.m. local time.
