Brocade and Network Appliance Enable LAN-Free Backup of Network Appliance(TM) Filers Over Brocade Storage Area Networks
SAN-based Backup Reduces Cost of Data Management for NAS Customers
SAN JOSE and SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. (Brocade®) (Nasdaq: BRCD - news) and Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTAP - news), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content delivery solutions, today announced that the Network Appliance FC Fabric Tape SAN Backup solution will now support Brocade Storage Area Networks (SANs). The networking storage configuration provides companies with a powerful and cost-effective tape backup and restore solution for data, offering more flexibility by allowing multiple Network Attached Storage (NAS) filers and multiple tape devices to be connected to a Brocade SAN fabric. The combination of a Brocade SAN and NetApp® filers delivers a highly scalable data and storage management solution that frees congestion on the customer IP network by moving data backup traffic to the SAN.

Brocade SilkWorm® fabric switches provide the world's leading intelligent networking foundation for storage area networks. Using Brocade switches, customers can connect servers with storage devices through a SAN, creating a highly reliable, manageable, scalable, and secure environment for storage applications. The addition of a Brocade SAN can simplify the data backup and recovery process and help ensure the backup and recovery of all enterprise data in a timely manner by moving backup traffic off of the customer's LAN and onto the SAN. The SAN enables bulk data transfer from each NetApp filer to shared tape storage, while the LAN is used only for communication (not backup) traffic between the servers and tape devices. The result is a faster, more scalable, and more reliable backup and recovery solution-with more effective utilization of storage, server, and LAN resources.

``Network Appliance is working closely with Brocade to deliver advanced, complementary solutions that provide enterprise-class reliability and performance for our customers,'' said Mark Santora, senior vice president of Marketing at Network Appliance. ``We continue to evolve our storage solutions and are proud to provide customers with powerful options that enable bulletproof data protection and disaster recovery for real-world deployments.''

``The combination of a Brocade SAN and the Network Appliance FC Fabric Tape SAN Backup solution helps our mutual customers enhance the scalability, productivity, and manageability of their NAS solutions by leveraging Brocade SAN infrastructure,'' said Jay Kidd, Brocade vice president of Product Marketing. ``As the leading supplier of fabric switches for networking storage, we are pleased to work with Network Appliance to enable enterprises to reduce backup times, relieve IP networks of excess traffic, and increase data manageability.''
