Inq Spot Market 1.33GHz Athlon now $165, Pentium III $200 Marco Fumagalli, 9 May 2001 10.19 BST
THIS WEEK THE INDUSTRY is really showing signs of creakiness, according to our man in the know, Marco Fumagalli. For new readers, the spot market is where all the real deals are done as people dispose of items which are becoming cheesy, or where items are becoming hot.
INTEL Rumours of yet another price cut in May are driving prices down further with the Pentium III 1.0GHz breaking the barrier of US$200. There is plenty of (over)supply from big vendors and OEMs while the demand remains very sluggish. All Pentium 4 flavours (including 1.7GHz) are available in Europe, but sales do not seem to be picking up yet.
PIII933 = $170 PIII1GHz = $190 P4 1.3GHz = $155 P4 1.4GHz = $185/$190 P4 1.5GHz = $235/$240 P4 1.7GHz = $330
AMD AMD prices, especially for 200MHz (system bus) parts, are also down slightly from last week's levels. The 1.3GHz running at 200MHz is now available, while the 266MHz is still in short supply.
Athlon 1.0GHz $130/$135 (add $4 for 266) Athlon 1.1GHz $145 Athlon 1.2GHz $150 (add $8/$10 for 266) Athlon 1.3Ghz $165
MEMORY The memory market is collapsing. During the course of last week, many big OEMs dumped their inventories in the spot channel. The sales wave, which originated in the Far East by Hynix moved then to US and Europe.
Manufacturers, worried by increasing inventories, are now following the market with lower and lower prices but nobody can really say if the bottom has yet been reached. Certainly, we are now well under the variable production cost.
Also DDR and RAMBUS prices went down significantly, as many are switching production lines in an attempt to reduce losses.
