Lightspan Signs Large, Multi-Year Contract with Colorado School District; Third Year of Increasing Purchases by Adams-50 Schools

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2001--Lightspan, Inc. (NASDAQ: LSPN), the nation's premier provider of quality curriculum-based educational software and Internet products and services used in schools and homes, today announced the signing of a multi-year contract to expand its products into the Adams 50 school district in Westminster, Colorado.

Lightspan CEO John Kernan said: "This is a major vote of confidence in Lightspan and demonstrates a level of customer loyalty that Lightspan has built up over the years in school districts all across the country." Kernan said that the Adams 50 school district contract is also an example of how Lightspan's suite of products present a complete solution for schools that are facing demands for student achievement, accountability, and assessment.

This new agreement includes a commitment in excess of $900,000 to add Lightspan's eduTest.com online assessment program into all 15 of the district's schools. In addition, the school district has expanded use of The Lightspan Network Internet education resource for teachers, students, and parents into all 15 schools, and the Lightspan Achieve Now educational software program to 8 of the 15 schools. The Adams 50 school district has been carefully assessing the impact of Lightspan Achieve Now since it first brought it into the district three years ago.

"Lightspan has proven to be a great investment for our students," stated Adams County School District 50 Superintendent George Straface. "It has paid dividends in terms of student achievement. When we received the third grade reading results of the Colorado Student Assessment Program, 86% of the schools using Lightspan showed improved scores compared to the previous year. In a recent study, our English language learners demonstrated the equivalency of five years growth in reading in two years time. We feel that Lightspan products help our students and teachers achieve success."
