Scientific-Atlanta Outlines Set-Top Strategy at SCTE, Unveils Explorer 4100 and 3100HD Set-Tops

Scientific-Atlanta's Subscriber Networks President, Dr. H. Allen Ecker, Announces Two New Explorer Digital Set-Tops During Annual Engineering Conference at Cable-Tec Expo

ORLANDO, Fla., May 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Providing cable operators with an expanded, powerful mix of new Explorer® digital set-tops, home gateways, and home media servers, Scientific-Atlanta today outlined a strategy designed to deliver an increasingly competitive advantage over satellite. The company's set-top roadmap includes a network computer that supports HDTV, a home gateway that is designed to support high-speed Internet access and connectivity with other home electronic devices, and a potent home media server capable of PVR and meeting the needs of high-end home theaters.

Scientific-Atlanta unveiled the Explorer 4100 home gateway and Explorer 3100HD digital set-top at Cable-Tec Expo's Annual Engineering Conference, while the Explorer 8000 home media server was announced late last year. All three new Explorer advanced digital set-tops, scheduled for production this calendar year, are network and software compatible with every Explorer set-top already deployed, and like the first Explorer digital set-top shipped, are fully capable of delivering a wide range of interactive TV applications.

``Our new Explorer 4100 home gateway is designed to support wired and wireless connectivity to link TVs, PCs, PDAs, phones, and other Internet appliances in the home with Scientific-Atlanta's fully interactive digital network, while our new Explorer 3100HD digital set-top is designed to meet growing consumer demand for high definition television,'' said Dr. H. Allen Ecker, president of Scientific-Atlanta's Subscriber Networks, speaking during Cable-Tec Expo's Annual Engineering Conference. ``As consumers install two, even three, set-tops in their homes, the interactive strategy behind our Explorer digital set-tops enables them to access a broad, new level of entertainment, information, and communication services. That deeper digital penetration is expected to result in higher consumer satisfaction, lower churn, and increased revenues for cable operators.''

The new Explorer 4100 digital set-top is a home gateway that features two tuners, including a DOCSIS modem, high-performance graphics and memory interface. In addition, the Explorer 4100 home gateway features USB and Ethernet ports, which make it an ideal platform for connectivity and interactive TV applications such as wireless home networking, via attachments to the set-top, and very high speed Internet enhanced TV.

Scientific-Atlanta's new Explorer 3100HD digital set-top functions as a network computer capable of presenting programming at high definition (HD) resolutions through the component outputs. The Explorer 3100HD is a next generation, high definition model that utilizes a highly integrated solution.
