hi norma

good to hear your new pc has arrived!

let me comment on your network plan.....

you do not need two cable modems. there are a variety of ways to link two pc's. most involve using three nic's (network interface cards) and either a cable or a hub or a router. confusing? don't feel so all alone.

basically, the machine hooked to the cable modem has a nic in it already. it will need one more. the second machine then gets a single nic. then you can link the two nics together with a crossover cable or via a hub or router.

but before i make mud out of clear water, please take a good long look at this networking site... it is tops as far as i'm concerned.

putergeek.com

i think you'll like what you find there. tell me if i'm right, okay? <g>

"Note: I don't know anything about PCs. Aarrgghh!"

well, that's not really correct, you do know some things. and don't forget, this is the computer learning thread, so you are not supposed to know about your pc. we all discover and learn with each other. so it's all right not to know.

"I am just assuming the new PC will work, what if it doesn't?"

new machines are getting easier and easier to set up. probably the most complex task you'll face is configuring your internet connection. the road runner folks should be able to walk you through that. if things are not going well and you want cl thread support (and who doesn't want that? <g3>), just plug in the old pc and come get us.

"I currently have Windows 95, is Windows 2000 Professional very different to learn?"

yes it's different, and you'll like the difference... plus it's intuitive enough that you should be able to make the transition from w95 without problems. for sure it would be better if you were migrating from w98 to w2k, but like i said, you'll pick it up. there are plenty of helpful articles and tip sites and a few win2000 users on the thread to help you, norma.

hope this helps. let us know. good luck!

:)
