The previously announced "attrition" plan at Intel is now underway, with the goal of reducing headcount by 5000.

Voluntary Separation Program (VSP) notices are being sent out to employees via e-mail. I'm not going to post the details, because I don't think they're public, but I will say that in my case the VSP payout would cost Intel ~$60,000. My compensation is probably above the corporate-wide average, but even if the average was $30k, this would result in costs of $30,000*5000 people = $150,000,000. With 7B shares outstanding, this could cost about $.02/share.
