Whoa there! That's a pretty big premise: "...let’s agree we insist on retaining full functional equivalence to IxWorks running on an Intel IOP". I don't see how such a premise is justified and certainly that's not how BlueArc's box is architected (nor is that what's going on inside EMC or NTAP boxes either). The interface requirements are IP and Gigabit ethernet since that's the only thing that can be "seen" across the wire. And that appears to be what BlueArc has implemented directly in hardware via PLAs. Nick Tredennick (part of the Gilder group) publishes an interesting newsletter titled "Dynamic Silicon" which is focused on the area of reconfigurable hardware. He seems to be of the opinion that we are moving past the microprocessor as the driving force in silicon technology and that PLAs represent the "next wave" of innovation. I'll have to ask him for his thoughts on WIND in this area.
