Paying off the debt might not be a bad idea. You never answered, however, if it was paid off what incentive would there be to keep politians of either party from running up new debt for "pork" projects to buy votes? Thinking about the children, do you believe older shareholders should insist that corporations that pay dividends, should stop doing so and first pay off all their debt? This would certainly benefit future generations of shareholders.
